Magical Thinking

Standard

Stuck in meetings all day, so this is a really quick one. I heard the phrase ‘magical thinking’ the other day, which is kind of an awesome way of saying superstition. Read this – I thought it was interesting.

See, I told you it was a quick one!

  1. Apophenia, my favourite kind of thinking 🙂

If you look under Magic & Religion on wikipedia there’s a nice soundbyte from Ramsey Dukes (yes, I know I am a Dukes fanboy) on the magician’s attitude to Magical Thinking and causality:

    (The following lifted from wikipedia)
Ramsey Dukes explains in his book S.S.O.T.B.M.E. that questions such as “Are you sure it was your magic that cured her?” are irrelevant to the magician. “If it was a coincidence, it doesn’t matter just so long as he can bring about such coincidences”
